Harvest Market at Rockhill

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Our opening day for the farmstand and the Harvest Market at Rockhill was almost a month ago. We had more than 140 visitors despite the cold and blustery weather. The Dry Lake Band treated us to some great blue grass … a few of them may have had blue fingers by the end of the day.

The Dry Lake Band from Logan performed some great music.

We had set up our remaining hay bales to serve as both the stage backdrop and bleachers for the guests.

Our guests were treated to some great foot-stomping tunes.

We can only use our hay barn for something like this in May and early June … then we start to fill it back up with hay for the coming year.

Many visited the girls while listening to the band.

We have only had one nice day so far this season for the Market. But tomorrow looks to be perfect. Hope you can visit. — PS

Market Season!!!

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Last Saturday was the opening day for our Cache Valley Gardeners Market. It was a bit on the cool side, but we had a great turn out … more than 80 vendors and many hundreds of visitors.

As always, it was great to connect with so many old friends after a long winter of relative isolation. This week, our town is hosting Black & White Days—the oldest Holstein Cow Show west of the Mississippi. And this Saturday, yours truly will be managing the B&W Days Horse Show. I’ve been “in charge” of the show for the last 11 years, and am looking for someone to volunteer to take over the bulk of the responsibilities … anybody out there?

The following Saturday is the opening day for the Richmond Harvest Market at Rockhill and the opening day for our farmstand. Jennifer & I would like to invite everyone to visit the market and to visit our farmstand. Both are open from Saturday, May 22 through one of the later Saturdays in October (10 am-2 pm). -PS

To Moscow without a passport

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Our friends at the Moscow Food Coop in Moscow, Idaho invited us to participate in their 2nd annual cheese festival. It worked out perfect for us as it was scheduled for the Saturday after all three of our farmers markets were done—yes, all three ended on October 17.

We arranged for Rhett to milk on that Friday for us. And Shayne was already scheduled to milk that Saturday and Sunday morning, so we packed up and took off.

Now for those of you who don’t know, there is no easy way to get to Moscow from here. It is about 300 miles north of Boise, on the border with Washington. And the road from Boise through McCall, though quite spectacular, more resembles an amusement park ride than a highway. It took us 11 1/2 hours to travel the 650 miles … and to think that we only live six miles from the Idaho border!

We had some time to wander around Moscow on Saturday morning, before the festival began. It’s a beautiful little city, a bit on the windy side, but none the less, very nice. We visited their farmers market, walked the downtown area and then drove around the outskirts for a bit. The Palouse country is really something to see. We both wished we had had more time to explore.

The festival started at 1 pm but we arrived at noon and soon hundreds of folks were lining up to taste the cheeses brought by a total of 13 cheese makers.

We had come the farthest, but there were several cheese makers from the west coast also. I won’t even try to guess how many folks came through, but by the middle of the afternoon, the wait was up to two hours for folks to get to the tasting area.

We had a great time meeting the wonderful customers and staff of the Coop—now in it’s 35th year! Thanks for inviting us.—PS
