Hardy Cows have more fun

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday, it was cold and rainy all day. My friend Tod and I headed to Logan to restock cheese, and the women at Sweet Peas Natural Market asked how the girls were. Tod and I said in unison “wet.” Cold rain makes cows a little grumpy. Then about milking time last night the rain changed to snow, and boy did it snow. The first real snow of the season. After spending a few hours clearing driveways this morning, I let the cows out on the north pasture. And the party began. For those of you that have not had the pleasure of seeing milk cows in fresh snow, well, here are a few pictures to give you some idea. But to see them in person, now that would bring joy to your heart. I’ll bet our cows had more fun today than even the “happiest” California cows.

Jennifer and I have been worrying that Elsa, our oldest cow, would not make it through another winter. She is slow and arthritic, kind of like us. That’s her on the right playing with Ruby. She ran, bucked and jumped until she was out of breath. She acted at least 10 years younger than she did the day before.

For those of you who have visited us, these two pictures of Ruby should look familiar. She is always getting herself into some kind of mischief.

Ingrid loves to put her head down in fresh snow and just plow forward, coming up from time to time looking pretty silly.

And her daughter Iggy was nearby watching all the fun.

Ruby’s smile says it all … take that you happy cows.
