The Boys (Flint & Ian)

Monday, November 17th, 2008

For those of you who keep up with the happenings around here, you may remember that we were quite happy about being able to sell Flint & Ian, our two bull calves (Opal’s and Iggy’s respectively) to a guy from Castle Dale, Utah. He and his brother came up to get the boys and were going to train them as oxen to do some work on their small farm. We had asked them to send pictures and keep us updated on their progress. Here’s the first note we recieved from them.

Pete and Jennifer,

Here are a couple photos we took of the “Boys”. They are doing really well! Flint is the Nigh (Closest to me) ox and John (Ian didn’t stick, it sounded too much like Gee, the comand for turn right) is the Off ox. (My brother made me put on my “costume” for the photo shoot). They already know how to start, stop, turn left and right, and back up. This last week they were hitched to a small cart for the first time and pulled like little champs. I’ll update you with photos periodically.

Now before any of you get excited about making the “boys” earn their keep, just keep in mind what the future for most dairy bull calves is … steaks and hamburger, so Flint and Ian (now John) have it pretty darn sweet. Thanks Lance, for sharing this with us. Keep up the good work and keep those pictures coming. – PS

What a Difference a Couple of Days Makes

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Wow. Just last week we were enjoying some fantastic weather and the company of friends. This is the second year of a “tradition” here at Rockhill. We host groups of chefs from the various restaurants at Deer Valley Resort for a day of cheese making, cheese tasting, and communing with the cows. We had 18 chefs and bakers over three cheese making days visit from Deer Valley. And we also enjoyed a day with Steven Rosenberg, and the cheese crew from Liberty Heights Fresh. Thank goodness they all came the last two weeks instead of this week. Here’s a picture of what today was like:

And the next three photos were taken last Friday at sunrise … one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen.
