It’s a Girl!

Inez had her first calf Tuesday morning ... a very healthy heifer!

Inez gave birth to a beautiful heifer calf about 10 days earlier than expected. The weather was perfect and we had been bringing her in to the milking parlor for about a week — this is her first calf, so she is a milk cow in-training. We have decided to name the little girl Ida. Her great-grandmother is our oldest cow Ingrid. Her grandmother is Iggy. So you can see our naming system around here … it does help us remember the lineage of our “girls.” Inez has been milked four times as of this morning and is coming along nicely—kicking some, but not as bad as a few cows whose names start with “E”! —PS

Harvest Market opener

Richmond's Harvest Market is held here at the farm.

The season opener for the Richmond Harvest Market at Rockhill is this Saturday, June 2. We’ll be enjoying music by the Dry Lake Band, eating pizzas from Jack’s Wood Fired Pizza and seeing the first offerings of the season from our produce vendors. And the forecast is for sun and 80 degrees. So come join us for the fun.

New Faces

Sara making the cut on today's Gruyere

The last few weeks have brought some changes here at Rockhill. Our winter intern, Mariella, left us after the first week in April. Sara took the reins soon after and is quickly becoming proficient at all the tasks she’s been given.

She’s becoming a pro at milking the cows—the “girls” even think so …they let us know with how much milk they decide to give.

And now that classes are winding down for the semester (Sara is a grad student at USU), she is getting a chance to learn the craft of cheese making.

She’ll be at the Cache Valley Gardeners Market with Jennifer for the season opener Saturday, May 12…so swing by and say hello. PS
